The Childhood Days
Michael was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana (US), the seventh of the
nine children6 of Joseph and Katherine
Jackson. Joseph who worked in a steel mill was very interested in music and was
a part of the local Rhythm and Blues7
music group called Falcons, in Chicago, where he sang and played the guitar.
According to family members, Michael held a bottle and danced to the sound of a
washing machine when he was just one and a half years old and began singing when
he was three years old. Spotting the talent in his four elder boys, Joseph began
to train them in music after their school and Michael began imitating them.
Soon, Michael (aged six) joined his brothers and Joseph named them The Jackson 5
(also The Jackson Five or J5) (Refer Exhibit I for photograph of The Jackson 5).

In 1966, when The Jackson 5 won the local contest with Michael singing 'The
Temptations' and 'My Girl,' Joseph decided to make them a professional
troupe. He appointed himself as their manager and took the boys to various
local clubs. The Jackson 5 soon became popular entertainers in Gary and
surrounding areas. Every night, they practiced under the watchful eyes of
their strict father, traveled to various clubs during the weekends, often
reaching home on Monday mornings. Joseph took them to various venues in
Chicago and New York and made them participate in various talent shows. In
1967, The Jackson 5 caught the attention of Keith Gordon, owner of SteelTown
Records. He recorded their first album titled Big Boy, which, though not a
big hit, brought out little Michael's sweet voice.
|
This was followed by 'Some Girls Want Me for Their Love' in 1968. While
performing in Chicago, Bobby Taylor (Taylor), a producer and a performer
himself, saw their performance and took them to Motown, Michigan, and
recommended them to Berry Gordy, Head of Motown Records. Motown Records
completed negotiations with Steeltown Records to end their contract with The
Jackson 5 by March 1969. Later, in the same year, Taylor produced the first
album for Motown Records titled Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5,8
and released it in December 1969. The album was a huge hit and sold over a
million copies in the US. This was followed by another huge hit ABC,
released in 1970 (Refer Exhibit II for a list of The Jackson 5 releases with
Motown Records). |
